Basghetti!

Posted on: June 11, 2010

Yeah, so I would write about how working 60+ hours a week is the best possible thing for me, inevitably jinxing things and sending me into a downward health spiral for the week.  Yay!  Look at the good I do.

It depends on the day, but I’m usually pretty okay with this being the rest of my life.  I’m okay with fibromyalgia, Celiac disease, all or none of the above, but it’s also pretty shitty to know exactly what’s coming up.  There’s nothing I can do to stop it, it runs its course how it wants, and sometimes that means I’m fine but other times it means I’m collapsing at work and flailing for my cane to hold me up.  (Both the cane and the door saved me from truly busting my ass, and now I have a big bruise to poke at, so it all worked out in the end.)  At least I have insurance again and can hopefully get on the road to feeling better, but that’s not really an exact science either.  For now all I can do is roll with it.  Hopefully I’ll have a doctor after Monday and everything will come together!

I say this every time I find a new doctor, but maybe this time will be legit.

It’s been a good week aside from all that.  I’ve been applying for permanent jobs like crazy and hoping something will stick, and today was superfun.  It was Julie‘s last day at the office, which makes me very sad, but it was such a joy to have our work timeframes overlap at all!  Lunch and a cookie date were highlights of the day, as well as explaining to everyone how I incorrectly pronounce the word “submarine.”  (Sumbarine.)  I do not say “basghetti” instead of “spaghetti,” though, so at least there’s that.

Another good thing today: I checked out a gym I’m hoping to join, which should be good times!  Even though I am supersonically lazy, I am also tremendously cheap — like, so cheap I’m not even embarrassed to admit it here.  Paying for a gym membership is probably the best way to ensure I’ll actually go and work out, unlike the gym I mostly ignored in college.  I want to be healthy and I also haven’t worn a bikini since I was about seven years old, and even then I was embarrassed to be so fat in it.  I can’t imagine a world where I’ll ever feel differently but I would like to try finding out.

Happy Friday, y’all!

Day Off!

Posted on: June 6, 2010

Today was a lazy day, my very favorite kind of day!  Today was my big day off between my two jobs, which usually falls on a Saturday, but it was just as nice to have Sunday off instead.  I did much-needed laundry and made my bed, cleaned up a little bit, and talked on the phone with my best friend, Chris, for about a million hours.  Favorite day!

All day I’ve been thinking about a trip to New York, maybe in mid-July, but I’m not entirely sure what I’d do there.  Bus prices are so super affordable coming from DC, it seems silly to blow the opportunity, but I don’t really have anyone to visit in the city anymore and I can do the big-city stuff here just as well.  I’ve never made it up for the Del Close Marathon, but then that scene hasn’t been on my radar in years anyway; silly to do a trip just for a culture I’m not a part of anymore.

As much as I LOVE days where I don’t even leave the house (even better if I get food delivered!), I don’t want to waste this summer, that’s the thing.  Last summer was a pretty phenomenal mix of Lazy and Accomplished, with a bit of Cancun Vacation thrown in as well, so I want to find that same balance again.  PS: Cancun Vacation, I wish you were in the cards this year too!

It’s been a good weekend at least, and tomorrow should be funtimes — Chik-fil-A’s spicy chicken sandwich debuts tomorrow, and I would be lying if I didn’t mention how HEARTBROKEN I will be if it’s unavailable at the Ballston Mall.  Heartbroken!  Then the WWDC is tomorrow afternoon, and I enjoy obsessively refreshing those results as much as anyone, and then I have the evening off!  Should be a good day, yes?  Yes.

Back Again

Posted on: June 5, 2010

I’ve done the blog thing a few times before and never stuck it out, but here we are!  Having a bloggy friend in real life has motivated me to get back into it.  (Thanks, Julie!)

I’m back in Arlington, VA, this summer just like I was last year, which is a totally drastic change from Greensboro, NC.  I love Greensboro about five million times more than I’d ever expected when I started college there, but it’s mostly the people I’ve met.  It’s my best friend (although he’s moved), it’s my loves at Friendly Center, it’s our store which is legitimately special — I’m not even being a revisionist on that last part, it’s just true.

DC is a completely different animal but in a wonderful way.  I work at least 60 hours a week, and I can’t lie and say that doesn’t suck sometimes, but I function so much better when I’m working my ass off.  There’s just not time to lose your shit when you’re working 7:30 AM to 10:00 PM, your schedule doesn’t allow it, and that totally works in my favor.  My day job is wonderful and my night job is really coming together in ways I couldn’t have imagined, so even as tired as I am, it’s worth it.

The dream was always to wind up in New York — that’s been my plan since we first moved out of there when I was ten, and now I’m not so sure.  DC is such a wonderful mix.  It’s big city enough, but it’s also Southern enough.  It’s not the South, it’s just the South’s hat.  I can take the metro anywhere I want, but I walk through quiet residential areas to get to/from my night job.

I think this summer I’m essentially living my dream.  I’m looking around my apartment and I’m pretty sure this is what I’ve always wanted.  Don’t get me wrong, I still wholeheartedly believe home is where your heart is, and my heart is an amalgam of cities (Jacksonville, Morrisville, Greensboro), but I’m here and it’s good.

It’s going to be an amazing summer, I can feel it.  My parents are coming to visit in two weeks, my best friend will be here in three or four, my childhood best friend’s wedding is in August… good things are approaching!  Let’s count on it.
